I’ve been thinking a lot recently about how these two groups are diagnosed. I know this subject has most definitely been touched upon before, but I wanted to bring it up again and maybe incite a discussion.
One thing I’ve noticed is that white children, lets say those that have ADHD, are often diagnosed in a timely and professional manner. Non-white children, however, are considered to be “troublemakers,” “problem children,” “burdens on their families,” and etc. before their diagnosis. This goes for autism as well. White children are more often diagnosed as soon as symptoms are seen, but black children are diagnosed nearly two years later than them (David S. Mandell, Sc.D.)
I’ve seen this happen in my schools, in studies, and in media as well. I almost feel as though this almost systematic approach to diagnosing non-white children is heavily influenced by the belief that white people can be considered flawed or “different,” yet still be considered human beings, whereas non-white children are considered lazy, unfit to live their own lives, nuisances, and what have you.
Something to think about when discussing race and second class treatment.
You ain’t kidding. A child (black) with Autism at my mother’s creche needs to go to a special-needs school where they will care for her but it’s been more than 2 years now. Meanwhile, another child (white) with autism is now in a special needs school after only 3 weeks of waiting.
It’s ridicolous because the parents are still applying and getting a ‘no’ back.
